This post will be completely off topic from the rest of this blog's posts. But right now I don't care. I just need to babble for a bit.
I've been getting some feedback lately from many people on my photos. I've been told they're really quite good. Sell worthy, kinda of good.
I just don't see it.
However, I digress....(I'm my own worst critic)
I've been toying with setting up a website to host a sample of my photos. However, I don't want to spend a fortune. I was hoping to find a good freebie site, however I've come to realize I'm going to have to pay for a domain name and for the site itself. So long, $100.
Speaking of domain names: what the heck do I call myself? I'd like something a little more creative than just 'Erin Lastname Photography', though going with that isn't necessarily a bad thing either.
Ok, back to the website: I don't know the first thing about setting up a website. I need something that is INCREDIBLY dummy proof. Sure I could hire someone to put something together for me but that just screams HUGE PRICE TAG to me. Cheap people. I need to keep it cheap.
And how much do I charge per photo? 5x7 would be one price. 8x10 another. Framed. Unframed.
A few people have suggested I try to sell some at the local farmer's market this summer...they claim the tourists would eat them right up and I'd "make a killing". The thought was to get one of each of the photos printed for display and take orders for pick up in a few days or to have shipped out. Ok, great. However, I could only do this every other weekend since that is how my work schedule works - the market happens weekend mornings: one weekend I work mornings the next i work evenings.
I guess right now my "specialty" is scenics so I guess that is how I'd market myself: specializing in Nova Scotia scenics.
So, this is where I stand:
1)how to put together a website?
2) what to call myself? (I'm taking suggestions. Seriously....fire 'em at me!)
3) How much do I charge per photo: I don't want to gouge people but I need to make a bit of change myself
4) many of you have seen some of my photos on FB: are they REALLY sell worthy? Seriously? Be honest.
My cousin just bought (yes, bought) 5 of my photos to the tune of just over $60! I told her she was crazy, that I wouldn't take that much. To get an 8x10 printed is $4. To mail them is maybe another $4. The whole process cost me $24. I'd have been happy simply recouping my costs. Though my roomie pointed out: you're only saying that because she's family. What if it were someone else? Ok, good point. However, I still think she's insane.
Gah. I don't know what to do or how to even start!
When I got my camera back in December I had NO intention of ever thinking of selling my shots. None. However, I've been told a few times I have a natural eye for photography....it helps that I enjoy it! I'm not looking to make a career out of this. This is simply a hobby I enjoy that has the potential perk of making a few dollars as well.
I just don't know where to start....
I think that's great!
ReplyDeleteI have my website set up through godaddy.com and I've been pretty happy with it. It costs me like $50 a year for the hosting and they have a website builder that is very user friendly. I would check them out.
